The Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hanoi launched a city-wide “Green Weekend” campaign on July 20 ahead of the 78th anniversary of the War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27).

At the launching ceremony held at the Co Loa martyr cemetery in Dong Anh commune, Vice President of the committee Dang Thi Phuong Hoa said the initiative, beyond a campaign to protect the environment, aims to pay tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for national independence and freedom.

Representatives from youth unions and social-political organisations, and residents of Dong Anh commune expressed their consensus and commitment to the tribute activities.

The organisations and local authorities also called on the public to join efforts in caring for policy-beneficiary families and people who rendered service to the nation.

The “Green Weekend” programme encompasses renovating martyr cemeteries and hero memorial sites, sorting and collecting household waste, addressing improperly located garbage collection points, clearing drainage channels and sewers, and planting trees in residential areas, among others.
