The Hau Giang–Ca Mau main section, stretching 73.2 km, is set to be opened to traffic on January 19 morning, officially completing the Can Tho–Ca Mau expressway and giving a fresh boost to travel and trade across the Mekong Delta at the outset of 2026.
Tran Van Thi, Director of the My Thuan Project Management Board, said the new section, together with the Can Tho–Hau Giang segment that has been operating smoothly since late December last year, has completed the entire 110.85-km route. With total investment exceeding 27.52 trillion VND (1.04 billion USD), the four-lane expressway is built to modern standards and serves as a key transport artery linking major economic and political centres, industrial zones and seaports in the southwestern region.
The route allows a maximum speed of 80 km per hour, with a minimum speed set at 60 km per hour.
Running through Can Tho city and the provinces of An Giang and Ca Mau, the expressway features four lanes with a 17-metre-wide roadbed in its initial phase, which will be expanded to 24.75 metres in the fully completed stage. The entire corridor is equipped with modern facilities, including electronic toll collection and intelligent transport systems (ITS), to improve traffic management and operational efficiency.
The full opening of the Can Tho–Ca Mau expressway is expected to unlock substantial development potential for the southwestern region by cutting logistics costs and enhancing the competitiveness of local agricultural and aquatic products. Leaders of Can Tho city and Ca Mau province said the project will help attract investment into industrial parks and tourism, while laying the groundwork for major infrastructure schemes such as the Hon Khoai deep-water port.
For local residents, the expressway realises a long-held aspiration for a modern arterial route and contributes significantly to the Government’s target of completing 3,000 km of expressways nationwide.
